How to Revise A-Level Chemistry

A-Level Chemistry trips people up in a way that's different from most other subjects, and I think it's because students treat it as one thing when it's actually three.

Chemistry is really a combination of maths, facts, and understanding. Every student is strong in some of these and weak in others. Some people can recall facts effortlessly but freeze the moment a calculation appears. Others can do the maths in their sleep but can't explain why a reaction happens the way it does. The truth is you need all three to do well, and each one needs a different approach to revision. Treating them the same way is where a lot of students go wrong.

Here's how I'd break down revision for each.

Maths

This is the simplest of the three, because it comes down to one thing: practice.

There's no trick to acid-base calculations or amount of substance questions. You just need to see enough of them that the method becomes automatic. The more questions you do, the better you get. It really is that straightforward.

Chemsheets is the best resource I know of for this. It covers every question type you'll come across, and it's particularly strong for the maths-heavy topics like acids and bases and moles calculations. Work through those systematically.

Once you've built the method up, move on to PMT (Physics and Maths Tutor), which has past paper questions organised by topic. This is where you start applying the maths in the format you'll actually see in the real exam. Both resources matter here. Chemsheets builds the skill, PMT tests it under exam conditions.

Understanding

This is the hardest part, by a fair distance, and it's the one that took me the most work when I was doing my A-Levels.

Some topics have an easy factual layer but a much harder conceptual one underneath. NMR is a good example. The facts around it are recallable easily enough, but actually understanding what's going on, why the peaks appear where they do, why splitting patterns look the way they do, takes real thought.

When I was at school, this was the hard part to solve, not because the concepts were unteachable, but because good explanations were hard to access. I'd be stuck on something and have to wait until my teacher had a free moment, or until my next tutoring session, before I could actually get it explained properly.

That's changed a lot. There are more options now than there used to be:

YouTube has a huge number of chemistry explainers, and a good video can save you hours of confusion.

Tutoring gives you a person who can adapt the explanation to how you think, in real time.

Teachers at school are still one of the best resources going, if you can get time with them.

AI is the newer option, and one worth using properly. You can ask it any misconception you have and get an explanation back as if you were speaking to a person, at any hour, as many times as you need.

One thing to flag with AI though: it can sound completely confident while being wrong. Treat what it tells you with a healthy amount of scepticism, especially for anything you can't cross-check against your spec or a textbook. Use it to unblock yourself and build understanding, but don't take it as gospel.

Whichever route you use, the same rule applies as with maths. Watching a video or getting a good explanation is only the first step. Close it, then try to explain the concept back to yourself without any help. That's the point where understanding actually sticks.

Facts

There's no shortage of resources for the factual content in Chemistry. Save My Exams, your textbook, your class notes, all of these will cover the spec content well enough.

My main piece of advice here is to pick one comprehensive resource and stick with it. Don't try to compile facts from five different sources. Anything extra you're missing will surface naturally once you start doing exam questions and notice the gaps.

The one I recommend without hesitation is Chemrevise.org. It's the most comprehensive and easily accessible set of notes I've come across for A-Level Chemistry, and it's free.

The bit that matters most here isn't which resource you use though. It's how you retain what's in it. Reading notes once and moving on won't get facts into long-term memory, no matter how good the notes are. You need active recall on a spaced schedule, the same principle that applies to any subject with a large volume of content to remember.

Putting it together

Maths, facts, and understanding all need to be revised, but not all in the same way. Drill maths through repetition. Chase understanding through explanation, whether that's a video, a tutor, a teacher, or AI, followed by testing yourself without help. Learn facts from one solid source and retain them through active recall and spacing rather than rereading.

Most students who struggle with A-Level Chemistry aren't lacking ability. They're usually applying the wrong method to the wrong part of the subject, most often rereading notes when they should be testing themselves, or skipping past a concept they don't understand because the facts around it feel manageable. Separate the three out, and revise each one properly, and the subject becomes a lot more manageable.

Chemistry isn't one subject. It's three, and each one needs its own approach.
